Tips for Perfect Travel in India
There are plenty of things you can spend money on that don’t
increase your IQ, but travel is one wise investment that pays annual dividends
beyond the fun of bragging to your friends about your most recent vacation. That’s right, travel actually makes you smarter.
Here are few tips for a smart travel..
1. Be Flexible
We always plan for delays
and try not to get upset when things inevitably go wrong. Patience is extremely
important when traveling! And when traveling in India keep an extra bag of
patience.
2. Make Packing List
About a week or
so before each trip, I make a list of items you don’t want to forget.
Packing lists are essential! Don’t underestimate them.
3. Learn Common Phrases of the Local Language
A simple “Please,” “Thank
you,” and “I’m sorry” in the local language goes a long way. And it is also fun
to have conversations.
4. Don’t Forget an Extra Camera Battery
Your DSLR’s battery will
drain only when you have a never ever moment. I try to take at least three
camera batteries on all my trips so that I don’t miss out on that perfect shot.
You may try with one extra battery.
5. Always Bring a Sarong
Sarongs can be used as
a wrap when you are cold, a towel, a curtain, or a piece of clothing that
can be worn dozens of different ways. In India, many temples and ancient
monastery will not let you in unless you have covered yourself completely. You
will than me for this idea.
6. Always Buy Travel Insurance
A medical emergency can wipe
out your savings — or even worse. Always buy travel insurance. It is not an
unnecessary expense. Trust me.
7. Make Photocopies of Important Documents
Make photocopies of
important documents and keep them in different bags. If you are a regular
traveler, this trick will help you a dozen of times. Thank me later.
8. Pack Extra Underwear
Undies are small and it’s
always a good idea to have a few extra pairs in case of emergencies. Haven’t
you noticed that you always fall short of underwear in all your trips. So try
this next time.
9. Pre-plan Your Outfits
I’m a lazy, last-minute
packer, so I’ve spent too many trips with all black or all grey outfits because
I didn’t plan my outfits before packing. I look back at photos and wish I had
put more effort into packing. So, don’t be lazy, pack in advance.
10. Put Electronics, Medications, Toothbrush, and
an Extra Pair of Underwear in Your Carry-on
A few important items should
always go in your carry-on. A swimsuit is also a good idea if you are going on
a beach vacation. You can buy most of these things if your bag gets lost, but
having them in your carry-on will save you money and time if your luggage gets
lost in transit.
11. Enquire about the price BEFORE You Take a
Transportation
It’s a good idea to ask
about the price before you hop on in a cab in India. I learnt this after paying
lot extra too many times. Now I am smart, so be you.
12. Stay Hydrated on Travel & Destinations
I know it’s fun to get drunk
at destinations, but it’s also much easier to get dehydrated. Staying hydrated on
trips to enjoy most of the vacation.
13.
Put
Your Room Number & Hotel Address in Your Phone
Am I the only one who can’t
remember my hotel room number?? There has to be others out there like me.
Correct?
14. Ask
The Locals
We always ask the locals to
point us to the best restaurants, awesome spots to watch the sunset, the best
coffee shops, etc. I do like to tell people what type of food I’m craving
though. I’ve been led to some interesting restaurants that wouldn’t have been
my first choice otherwise.
15. Alert Your Bank about your Travel Plans
This is a great habit to get
into if you don’t want your credit card company or bank to put a hold on your
card while you are in some remote town. They will just say “sorry cant help it”
and nobody will help you either.
16. Take Plenty of Photos
They make the best
souvenirs! If you get lazy and don’t click, you wont get it again. Also spend
quality time at the place. Cherish moments without camera too.
17. Keep an Open Mind
Don’t judge other customs.
You are a visitor. Be respectful.
18. Separate Your Sources of Money
Don’t keep all of your cash
and cards in one spot. I usually hide some cash and a back up credit/bank card
in a separate bag — not the same bag as my wallet. It helps, do it.
19. Travel First Aid Kit
We pack up a small first aid
kit with aspirin, Nasivion, Benedryl,
cold meds, cough drops, bandages, Antiquinol (these are a life saver for
traveler’s diarrhea and minor allergic reactions)
20. Be open for Travel Tips
There may be people who have
traveled lesser than you have, still could give you a handy tip which hadn’t
striked you. Be open to ideas and tips. Who knows someone random can give you a
tip for lifetime.
Life itself is a Journey, Travel wisely…
