Railway’s New Cancelation / Refund Rules – Know it before you get Pinched

Cancelling a ticket and getting refund was a very easy and known procedure earlier. Well, it still is; only a few rules here and there have changed. Once you get a note of the new set of rules, you are back on track. Here are few things to note.

1. Refund on Tatkal tickets:
You can book a Tatkal ticket just a day before the date of journey. If you have a confirmed Tatkal ticket and you want to cancel it, you won't get any refund. If your Tatkal ticket is in waiting then according to railway rules some amount will be deducted and the rest will be refunded to you.

2. Confirmed ticket:

If you haven't cancelled your confirmed ticket four hours prior to the commencement of the train and not filed TDR (ticket deposit receipt), then no refund will be initiated.

3. RAC e-ticket:
If you have RAC (reservation against cancellation) e-ticket and you didn't cancel it 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure of the train, then you won't get any refund.

4. I- ticket with waiting:

An I-ticket can be cancelled from computerised passenger reservation system (PRS) counter 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of the train. That's for RAC or waiting tickets too. No refund will be generated after that.

5. After departure time of the train:
If the ticket is cancelled after the train's stipulated time of departure, no refund will be provided under circumstances of cancellation or surrender of the ticket. Not even if the train is running late.  Please note that the departure time is to be taken care of and not the actual running time.

6. Booking in a premium special train:

According to IRCTC rules for premium special trains, confirmed or RAC ticket cancellation is not allowed. The ticket can only be cancelled if the train has been cancelled. So no refund for cancelled premium tatkal tickets.

7. Partially confirmed e-tickets:
If the ticket is not cancelled 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure of the train and TDR is not filed, then no refund will be generated (if a passenger is not travelling). The same rule applies for RAC and waiting tickets too. For eg – If you have a ticket with 4 passenger and out of that you need to cancel one, the same rule of cancelation applies.

8. I-ticket gets lost:

If your I-ticket gets lost, then you can't avail of cancellation. However, railways can issue you a duplicate I-ticket.  You can travel by this duplicate ticket but cannot avail cancelation.

9. If the ticket is in RAC after the chart is prepared:
If your ticket is in RAC after the chart is prepared and you don't cancel the ticket or file a TDR before 30 minutes of the scheduled departure of the train then no refund will be provided.

10. If "Cancelled" is marked in the train PRS:

This happens when a particular train is cancelled. In such cases, you can avail of full refund till three days after the commencement of the train.

These rules have been amended for the benefit of the passengers and for the railways aswell. It is due to these rules that we can get instant tickets over app hand reservation counters. Now people don’t hold back cancelation of tickets till last moment, as a result travelers who want to travel are benefited.
